Destination: Versailles

Known throughout the world for the its Palace and accompanying gardens, the town of Versailles, situated 16 kilometres to the south-west of Paris, is of utmost importance in French history. Versailles was not only being the city of Kings, from Louis XIII to Louis XVI, but also the birthplace of the French Revolution. In the 17th Century, King Louis XIII set out to build a hunting site in Versailles, in a small village of which nothing is left today. The town was completely transformed by the Sun King (le Roi Soleil in French), Louis XIV, who constructed one of Europe's biggest palaces: The Palace of Versailles. In the 18th Century Versailles was considered a highly modern city. The arrangement of its three main avenues, along with its gardens and lakes, inspired the construction of Washington, US. The construction took place at the beginning of the 20th century and Washington still remains the same

As one of the greatest monuments of the French capital, listed on the World Heritage list, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is one of the most remarkable masterpieces of gothic architecture. Designed by Maurice de Sully, the construction of this cathedral began in 1163 and took nearly two centuries to complete; it was finally finished in 1345. Notre Dame cathedral underwent a restoration in the 19th century, led by the French architect Viollet-le-Duc, during which the great spire was rebuilt, and after the façade was restored in 2000, the Notre Dame now looks just as magnificent as it did when it was first built.
